The United Nations Palestine Refugee Agency (UNRWA) started a
fund-raising campaign to raise $ 500 million, beginning on Monday, January 22,
2018. The rally took place several weeks after US President Donald Trump's
administration decided to temporarily withhold the regular annual grants they
gave to UNRWA for 2018. The United States holds almost half of their annual
routine annual budget to the UN Nations Relief and Works Agency for PalestineRefugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This year, the US is planned to give about
US $ 125 million to UNRWA. Therefore, after the decision, Washington DC will
only provide UNRWA funds worth US $ 60 million only. The remaining funds, worth
US $ 65 million, will be held for consideration in the future. The announcement
shocked and angered the Palestinian refugees. The decision also made UNRWA,
struggling not to interfere with the services of 5 million registered
Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and
Syria. Peter Mulrean, director of UNRWA in New York, said, "We provide
education for over 500,000 children in 700 schools across the region."
"We conducted 9 million health care visits in 150 clinics last year, we
are taking care of 1.7 million Palestinian refugees with food insecurity, 1
million of them in Gaza, these are things that we do not stop doing from day to
day," he said. commenting on the detention of funds for the Palestinians.
